Another professional qualification after ACA

I sincerely hope to gather more comments about my future development.

After obtaining the ACA qualification and Master degree in Finance, I am planning to further develop my knowledge and obtain another professional qualification.  My career goal is to become Financial Controller in commercial field.  How would you rank the below that would be the most beneficial to my career development?

1. CFA
2. LLB
4. MBA
5. CIA
6. Any other suggestion

Thank you very much!
  • l think gone are the days when one qualified and that was that. Now through one way or another, one is forced to carry on studying be it continuing development, short courses, seminars etc or even branching out to another field or even learning a new language, all these are the new realities of the modern workplace.

Personally l would like to try the CFA, for a start it is believed to be fiendishly difficult hence high failure rates - or am l misinformed. l also find finance quite interesting so for me this would be a good fit.

After or before this an LLB would be something l would love to do. l have always loved Law, if l weren't in accounting l would have gone this way and might stll do so in some form at a later stage. ln my opinion if you can marry the two together you will be a very sought after person as you can advise on technical elements, be involved in deal making, can advise on corporate and legal implications of any deal, in short the options appear endless.

Personally the MBA is the least of them. l had a lecturer who told me that what l had studied would be repeated at MBA level and that l could sleep through the first year as l knew all the stuff but would need to work for the thesis. Ever since then l have found it not worthwhile. However, as the market, employers etc seem fascinated with it, it may just be something one does to add to their marketability and not necessarily for any actual benefits. Anyway l could very well be wrong in this way of thinking. For me an MSc in Accounting/Finance makes more sense.

Anyway hope you can find something useful in what l have said.
  • My personal thoughts: In my opinion studying for degrees is not the essence towards a goal position. Rather application of the knowledge you have gained into practice.

Otherwise i am not against getting degree or doing further is good ..... i am also doing another professional degree after ACA.

    Best of luck!!!
  • I am currently pursing ACA and just have the last 3 papers to go and am planning to apply for a senior status law degree after i quailify as an ACA. So would be looking towards a practice in tax law.

In light of your experiances in the last 5 years, i was curious as to what your assessment would be now ? And if there is any other route you would suggest ?

    Thank you
