Cyber security tip of the week #10 - Are Apple Macs more secure than Windows?

Recently someone asked me if Apple Mac’s are more secure than Windows PC.

The answer is: no.

By and large macOS attracts less malware than Windows. However this is largely because of the far smaller install base of macOS compared to Windows. Estimates vary but macOS usage is somewhere between 5% and 10% of all laptops and desktops in use. The vast majority of the rest being Windows with a small percentage being a variation of Linux.

Quite simply the reward for criminals for creating Windows malware is always going to be greater than it would be for macOS malware.

The 10 Steps To Cyber Security makes no distinction between any OS. The security steps discussed are applicable to all variants of operating system.
