Cyber Security Tip of The Week ICAEW

Occasionally I hear people say; “I understand the threat from cybercrime but who would be interested in my company, I don’t have any valuable data.”

The simple fact is that all data is valuable to someone. Just last week I read a story about the theft of personal data from car body repair shops. The data was then used to make nuisance calls encouraging people to make claims following car accidents.

Data in all its forms is immensely valuable; just look at the market values of Uber, Facebook or Google.  Personally data of all kinds can be used to create highly realistic phishing emails. The more data the cyber criminals have the more realistic the malicious emails. As a result they have a greater chance of being successful.

A company that does not store credit card or bank account details is still a very valuable target to cyber criminals.
