Parliament is dissolved today. No new regulations for over a month! The red tape measure is at rest.
So this is a good time to consider government’s ‘one in three out’ policy and the prospects for Oliver Letwin’s promised bonfire of red tape after we leave the EU.
The Committee of Public Accounts was unimpressed by progress so far, pointing out the irony in counting the mandatory 5p plastic bag charge as a ‘saving’ and noting that costs arising from new regulations such as the National Living Wage collectively far outweigh the reported savings.
If government is still serious about cutting red tape it seems to me that it needs help. Our members are well placed to assist, for instance in assessing the measures used and in identifying areas where red tape could usefully be cut. But do we want to help?
Is there really too much ineffective or unnecessary regulation and does it matter?
