At the start of 2018 few people would have managed to accurately predict the turbulent geo-political events we have seen in the Asia region – trade wars, on-off reconciliations and political change being at the forefront. It strikes me that these are all linked one way or another to trust. I believe that to fulfil the obligations of our Charter, ICAEW and our members must be seen to be in the business of trust to the benefit of society and through this we can deliver on our vision of a world of strong economies. The importance of the theme of trust was amplified by two particular UK led engagements we were involved in recently: the role of the Chartered bodies in the DIT’s “Knowledge is Great” campaign and the City of London’s “Beyond Brexit: New Opportunities”.
So far this year we have welcomed members (some newly qualified and some re-locating) to Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Each of them I have met has commented on the support they draw from ICAEW in their careers and in helping them make a difference in their countries. We are glad that ICAEW is making an impact through creating a connected community for our members in the region.
Finally, on the theme of connected communities, ICAEW local offices have continued to provide support to members and stakeholders particularly on our ABCD initiatives (AI, Blockchain, Cybersecurity and Data analytics). The most successful events were the ones with practical insights shared by experts and our members.
