On 7 January 2020, the GOV.UK website experienced a technical issue which prevented VAT return filing using the Making Tax Digital system. HMRC has given us the following message to share with affected users:
'Earlier today we experienced a technical issue which affected our digital services. As a result, the MTD service was unavailable for a period of time.
As the incident occurred on a VAT filing day (7 January) we advise that any customers who were unable to file today try again tomorrow. Customers, or those acting on their behalf, will not receive a penalty for filing their return tomorrow.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused to those customers concerned.

Mr L.E.V Itlate tried to file on 7th January and went on holiday on 8th January. Will he return to find a penalty assessment has burned hole in his doormat?
It didn't affect me, but not really much point ICAEW sending this out a full week later!
