Tax repayments: how is HMRC performing in 2017?

The Tax Faculty would welcome current evidence of how quickly HMRC is issuing refunds in 2017, to support the work we do to monitor HMRC service levels.

Please comment below on your experience of refunds, telling us:

  • What the overpayment relates to – self assessment, individual PAYE, corporation tax, Employers’ PAYE etc
  • How long you have you been waiting or, if the repayment has now been received, how long it took to be processed
  • If the repayment was withheld by HMRC, the reason for this, if known
  • Any general comments on the repayment process in relation to any specific tax (or taxes).

I did mine on the 8 April and its still bank repayment pending. Have called, emailed and even wrote a letter of complaint still nothing. The difficulty is that l don't know what's happening and haven't been asked for any information, only being told security checks, specialist team etc.

SA return submitted on 9.6.17 and £26k repayment been showing as pending ever since. Telephoned HMRC today 13.7.17 and was advised as the refund was such a large amount it was going through security - now in the final stages of the security process and would be released within a week if all security checks were passed. I have never been able to get HMRC to explain what security checks it actually performs but these should take hours not weeks and months.

Got the letter yesterday saying that I was due a refund of £13.80. Went to website to get a refund but found I need an account. I set up account and was given a 12 number user ID!! Ridiculous, am I supposed to remember that? OK I can print it off but that means I have a piece of paper that anyone can read. OK so I carry on, it then tells me I need a PIN that would be texted to me or voice mail or another way I cannot remember. I don't have a mobile so you cannot test me, I don't have voicemail so that is no good and the last one was some sort of app which was no good either. At this point I was so hacked off I just decided to wait the 60 days and get a cheque and then I'll have to go and find a bank.

For crying out loud simplify your procedures, I know it is all to make it secure but you're not you making it more insecure and just leaving people frustrated.

Overtaxed in September 2016 on PAYE - massively. Apparently it was because they hadn't got a P45. The P45 arrived 1 week later dated 3 days before September pay day. Finance department at work rectified mistake for payment in October 2016. We're now on 23rd July 2017 and I am still awaiting refund! Got told I had to wait till end of tax year April 2017 before they could work out amount of overtax. Been fobbed off since about waiting for a P60. Received a letter dated 10th July 17 on 22nd July 17 stating that it could take another 60 days to return me MY money. Thing is the refund is for the exact amount I told them they owed me back in September 2016. All in all they will have had MY money for a year - wasn't too keen when I asked about interest on the money! I wonder if I underpay whether I'll be allowed a year to work out repayment!
