Tax repayments: how is HMRC performing in 2017?

The Tax Faculty would welcome current evidence of how quickly HMRC is issuing refunds in 2017, to support the work we do to monitor HMRC service levels.

Please comment below on your experience of refunds, telling us:

  • What the overpayment relates to – self assessment, individual PAYE, corporation tax, Employers’ PAYE etc
  • How long you have you been waiting or, if the repayment has now been received, how long it took to be processed
  • If the repayment was withheld by HMRC, the reason for this, if known
  • Any general comments on the repayment process in relation to any specific tax (or taxes).

  • Two of my clients have been issued tax repayments despite being told that they no longer need to submit a tax return as their earnings are low. Upon investigation HMRC had simply included the bank interest receipts and associated tax deductions from 2015-2016 in their tax calculation for 2016-2017.

Having made several calls to HMRC this position has been corrected to reflect the fact that tax had not been deducted at source by the bank and therefore no tax refunds were due. The cheques that have been issued have been returned to correct the position.

The administration of all this on both sides is time consuming and tedious for no benefit to anyone!

Is this the experience of other people and apologies if this is the wrong place to post this!

As regards correct tax repayments I have found the process to be relatively seamless with repayments being issued promptly.
